The Living Lab Leemsteen, in which our organization participated, has now been successfully completed. This collaborative project focused on the use of unfired earth blocks (leemsteen) in contemporary architecture in Western Europe.
One of the main outcomes is the publication of a practical guide entitled “Masonry with unfired earth blocks in Western Europe: inspiring reference projects”. This guide brings together 32 Belgian and European projects in which unfired earth plays a central role in the architectural concept and material strategy. The projects were selected in consultation with partners, architects, contractors and producers, and illustrate the diversity of contexts and current approaches.
The guide is available online in Dutch and English.
The research continues after the Living Lab, notably on topics such as life cycle assessment (LCA).
An additional technical publication, focusing on design and implementation guidelines, is also in preparation.
Feel free to share this guide with contacts who may be interested.
